The Friends of Ulley Country Park have an exciting project in the new Spillway performance area. The Friends have commissioned Coralie Turpin, a local professional ceramic artist, to design and create a mosaic to enhance the artistic environment of The Spillway and create a lasting feature depicting the flood. The mosaic will form the centrepiece for an official opening of The Spillway by the Mayor on the 18th of April to give wide publicity for the venue and also provide an attractive and permanent artistic backdrop which will be an interesting feature for all visitors to the Park.
In addition, we have involved local schoolchildren from Canklow and Newman schools together with Wickersley, Clifton and Rawmarsh schools to create individual mosaic plaques, to complement the main large mosaic. The four local Parish Councils and Ulley Sailing Club are also supporting the project and creating a mosaic each.
We have been successful in getting a grant from the Big Lottery Fund Awards for All to support the project together with a financial contribution from the Council, Ulley Sailing Club and the Parish Councils.
All the workshops to make the smaller mosaics have now been held and have produced 14 wonderful pieces of artwork, all different yet reflecting the features and wildlife of the Park together with the local parishes.
Coralie is now making the main mosaic which will incorporate a Facts Time Line about the flood of 2007 as well as depicting the dramatic flow of water, rocks and soil.
